if you could have any job…

wow, this is something i think about a lot, since i am currently in between careers and know that eventually i will have to re-enter the work force.  my current gig, domestic goddess, while fulfilling, doesn’t really help pay the bills.

here are some things i am considering:

1. race car driver: i think i would be well suited for this.  i have thrill seeking tendencies, i stay cool under pressure, i like to drive fast….but the number of ladies out there on the track is minute, and the only one i can think of has a much younger, sexier, sponsorable vibe than i could probably master in my size 16 coveralls.  unless bravado or cotton babies wanted to enter a new arena of advertising.

2.  barrel racer:  see above for interest in going fast and thrill seeking tendencies.  plus i am definitely in the right geographical location for this to become a reality.  of course i don’t have a horse, so that is a problem.  and i am not sure i need a supply of fancy belt buckles, since i don’t really own a belt….

3.  modern danceri think this could really tap into my desire for the theatrical.  not to mention that i, of course, have all the moves.  i know i don’t really have the body of a dancer, but mia michaels assures me there is a place in modern dance for women of size.  i’ll leave this one as a maybe.

4.  professional reader: i don’t know if there is a career out there that involves getting paid to read books, but if so, sign me up!  i am a very fast reader.

5.  illustator: this is actually my dream job and i keep swearing up and down that i am going to find some sort of class on how to get started doing this professionally.  actually there is a course at the austin museum of art in children’s book illustration that i have been lusting after.  maybe in the summer….

some jobs i have done in the past, but can’t really see going back to:

teacher (no more teenagers, ever), newspaper editor (this was actually pretty fun and i really enjoyed laying out the paper, might consider being behind the scenes computer person), starbucks shift supervisor (money to trouble ratio not good, might go back as a lowly barrista to avoid the stress of responsibility), fish and lizard caretaker at petsmart (crickets, ew), swim instructor/lifegaurd (actually a pretty fun gig and you get to blow your whistle a lot, not sure i would want to be hanging out in my bathing suit in front of the world at this time), pizza maker at mr gatti’s (def no bathing suits after doing this, all the pizza you can eat?  enough said), checker at heb (i was the first person ever to make a perfect score on the training test), sales clerk at cp shades (wow i had a lot of linen clothing after that summer), summer camp counselor (i had a really great tan and knew lots of fun songs), ice cream store clerk, law firm slave….
